We run monthly spay/neuter days in our on-site vet clinic, and occasional spay/neuter days in local villages and elsewhere when the opportunity arises.
Since January 2000, AWARE has sterilised nearly 8,000 dogs and cats in Guatemala. This means an enormous decrease in the number of abandoned animals suffering on the streets. We provide low cost veterinary services to local villages (including rabies vaccinations, de-worming medication, spay/neuter, and veterinary check-ups). The costs of these services are reasonable because all our vets volunteer and we only need to cover the cost of supplies. For example, we often charge less than US$10 to neuter a dog, because our only cost is for the anaesthesia.
